Owning a pet is a lifelong commitment. You bring the animal into your home and are supposed to be responsible enough to care for them. Sadly, many people are not prepared to make that commitment.

They think getting and owning a dog is something that can be undone – that they can just dump the animal out in the world and it will all be okay. It is not okay. Blanca Cushman and her cousin live in South Carolina.

They were out running errands when they saw a small dog tied to a tree. There was no owner around. The two women didn’t want to leave the poor creature alone and tied to a tree.

When they approached, they saw the handwritten note.

The dog, Scooter, was being given away because his previous owner, Eric Dugwyler, had been arrested for narcotics possession. Eric didn’t want the police to take custody of his dog, so he gave Scooter to two of his friends.

As soon as Eric was taken away, the two friends abandoned the dog (some friends they turned out to be). At least Eric had tried to do the right thing for his dog. Unfortunately his friends were uncaring and just dumped to Scooter. Blanca posted Scooter’s story on Facebook asking for help.

Paula Langford, the operator of South Eastern Homeless Shelter, replied.

Scooter is in Paula’s capable hands, and she hopes to be able to give him a loving forever home really soon.

A woman from Huntington, New York, experienced constant pain for a whopping thirty-five years, leaving her bedridden.

But as it turned out, the solution to her troubles had been right in front of her the whole time. Dana Anhalt, who is 37 years old, has suffered from a long list of illnesses from a young age.

A Pennsylvania woman has been jailed for committing large-scale welfare fraud. Sabrina Strothers of Pittsburgh collected approximately $130,000 in welfare benefits for three children who don’t exist, reports the Daily mail. Her charges were announced by the Allegheny County District Attorney’s office on Dec. 12.

The 23-year-old Strothers is accused of claiming to give birth to three children in 2008 named Thomas, Tomalyia and Tyreik Wilson, according to officials.

Her cousin reported her to Pittsburgh officials in January. The state’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) has a “Report Fraud” section on its website, and also a “toll free welfare fraud tipline.” The OIG defines welfare fraud as being “when an individual uses fraudulent means to receive public assistance benefits to which they were not entitled.”

When investigators followed up on the cousin’s tip, they discovered that the Social Security numbers for Strothers’ children’s actually belonged to people born in 1887, 1945 and 1960.

According to court records, Strothers was charged with two counts each of forgery and making false statements in a welfare investigation and one count of theft by deception, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Strothers reported the birth of triplets to the county Assistance Office in November 2008, and continued to list the children on applications for benefits through 2016.

When contacted by the Office of the Inspector General, Strothers claimed the triplets lived with their father in Georgia, but was unable to provide the father’s address or telephone number. She eventually confessed to investigators that she falsified the information.
Investigators itemized the fraud as follows: $37,269 in food-stamp benefits, nearly $90,000 in medical assistance and just more than $2,000 in benefits from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

A preliminary hearing for Strothers is scheduled for Dec. 22. According to the Pennsylvania OIG, “If found guilty of committing welfare fraud, a defendant must make full restitution of the overpaid benefits, can receive a sentence that can includes community service, probation or incarceration, pay costs and fines to the court, and be disqualified for a period of time from public assistance benefits.”

In September 2016, Ashley Denise Attson, 23, put her 1.5 year old baby daughter in a stroller, pushed the stroller out into the Navajo Nation desert, and left her to die.

U.S. District Judge David Campbell said Attson’s actions were cold-hearted and intentional this week and sentenced her to 20 years in jail.

The child was alone in the desert for four days and four nights before Attson took the body and buried it in an animal den. Read the full story here ▶

Heading into the medical field isn’t easy as everyone thinks. It is tedious, difficult and requires passion.

They would need years of practice and experience to try their best to help those in need. Dr. Jian Zhicheng was one such example.

She was the director and a veterinary doctor at the Xinwu Animal Protection and Education Centre in Taiwan. Unfortunately, the shelter had a problem of being overcrowded with animals. Read the full story here ▶

Kathy Venegoni, an animal advocate, posted a picture of two women forcing a puppy to drag heavy weights in Missouri.

Kathy is hoping to identify these two women and thinks what they did is animal cruelty.

According to The Humane Society of Missouri, the women were not doing anything illegal unless the dog was injured or underweight.

Police officers may be able to intervene if the weights were causing the puppy to be distressed.

Kathy said the dog weighed only about 30 pounds and was dragging 25 pounds of weights behind him.

The puppy would get stuck on the uneven pavement.

When Kathy approached the two women, they said they were training the dog.

What kind of dog training is that? No dog needs to drag weights unless they plan on it being a sled dog.

Two individuals are happy with each other but are happiest when they have a family that they could call their own.
