Now that Tom Brady has won his seventh Super Bowl, the question now is what does Belichick do? Does he go all in and get either a Marcus Mariota or Jimmy Garoppolo? Bring back Cam Newton with a full offseason? Or draft a quarterback and develop him to be the next quarterback? Garoppolo coming back would be good because he knows the system and they’d be more competitive. Mike Reiss reported last week the Patriots would trade a late-round pick to acquire Mariota which would be a lot better than bringing back Cam Newton.
Belichick should now realize they can’t be cheap at the position. It’s the most important position in the game. Good quarterbacks make you a better team. It also brings leadership and trust that in the biggest moments the quarterback will get it done. Newton followed the rules last year and never said anything bad about Belichick or the Patriots. However, finishing 7-9 is not an option when Brady just went to a new team and won the Super Bowl. The Patriots need to have an aggressive offseason and pay for a quarterback period. If they sign Newton again for $1 million they’ll be 7-9 again while their former quarterback is going to another Super Bowl.
Will The Patriots Trade For Marcus Mariota?
The Patriots are among a group of teams that are too far from the top of the draft order to be a likely landing spot for the top-draft-prospect quarterbacks, meaning we’re examining other veteran options who could be logical fits. While a Cam Newton return isn’t totally ruled out, it’s an unlikely option. The 27-year-old Mariota is under contract for one more year with the Raiders but carries a cap charge of $10.725M, an unlikely tab for them to pay for a backup in a cap-tightened year.
“Be it via a trade or cut, Mariota could find a new home this offseason … and the Patriots are a logical fit.”
Knowing Belichick’s history in the first round of the draft, they’ll either trade down, draft defense, or an offensive player that isn’t a quarterback. Belichick, I don’t think he believes in drafting a quarterback in the first round. He drafted Jimmy Garoppolo in the second and landed Brady in the sixth. Belichick probably still believes he can win with an average quarterback. Why? Because in his mind he made Brady because of the system he built for 20 years. Don’t be surprised if they do nothing in free agency and the draft at the position. They could wait like last year to see who is on the clearance shelf they can get cheap.
