Phoenix, AZ – Phoenix police released body camera footage of a police shooting in early April that took place in the Maryvale community of West Phoenix.
Police said 26-year-old Jose Arenas was killed in a police shootout that occurred after 8 a.m. on April 3 near the intersection of 75 April Avenue and Indian School Road.
Officials said police allege Arenas threatened several people and attempted to rob them, before executing the incident.
From there, an officer followed and chased Arenas through a nearby restaurant, where police say he pointed with his gun and attacked two customers.
In footage released on Friday by Phoenix police, Arenas can be seen several times pointing a gun at the responding officer as he crawled behind a seating area divider.
A Phoenix police officer can be heard several times yelling at Arenas for dropping his gun on the footage, including just before the fatal shooting.
Police said the responding officer, who identified the police as having served with the department for only two years, told Arnas to drop his weapon, with Arnus ignoring his command.
Police said the officer then shot Arnas, whose suspect died from his wound at a nearby hospital.
An internal investigation into the action of department officials is underway. Police said the case is also being reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
