Patriots Training Camp: What To Watch Out For

Training camp kicks off this week you know what that means. Football is around the corner. This is an important training camp for the Patriots for a variety of reasons. First all eyes will be on the quarterback competition between Cam Newton and Mac Jones. Jarrett Stidham is on the PUP list to the start of training camp. Second is Stephon Gilmore and his contract situation he is also on the PUP list to begin camp. Thirdly, we’ll see the new additions on offense and defense in some action leading up to the preseason.

Patriots Training Camp: Quarterback Compeition

The quarterback competition is real this year. Mac Jones selected by the Patriots at 15 in this years draft will go head to head with Cam Newton for the starting job. It seems Jones has already surpassed Stidham and is ready to compete which is great for Patriots fans and reporters. There hasn’t been a real quarterback competition in 21 years. For the first time in a long time all eyes will be on the quarterback position during camp. Former Patriots running back Kevin Faulk spoke about Mac Jones at an autograph signing last week

“Very intelligent. Doesn’t make too many bad decisions. Understood what the offense was. Understood what he needed to do as the starting quarterback, and I think that will be the same way here.

Stephon Gilmore Situation And Other Notes

Not only is Stephon Gilmore on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list to begin camp so is Chase Winovich, Jarrett Stidham, Terez Hall, Byron Cowart, Brandon King, Dalton Keene and Devin Smith are on the list. Winovich is a name to watch during camp and might be on the hot seat. He hasn’t been the brightest bulb doing interviews saying on Zolak and Bertrand last year he doesn’t understand the game plans. The Patriots may be too much for him to say the least. As for Jarrett Stidham he really hasn’t taken the steps needed to compete with Newton. He didn’t even start a game last year.

Patriots fans can rest assured this season as online sports betting in Michigan is live and accepting wagers on local teams. The MI market has become one of the leaders since it’s launch in 2019, with multiple sportsbook operators including DraftKings and FandDuel all working seamlessly. With the 2021-22 NFL season approaching another huge wagering year is expected within the Wolverine State.

As for Gilmore, he is doing a “hold in.” Meaning he’s coming off an injury but isn’t ready until his contract needs are met. He may milk the injury till he gets the deal he wants. I’m expecting Cam Newton to start the season because he goes along and does what Belichick tells him to do. Belichick doesn’t like to admit mistakes so he’s going to go with Newton as long as he can.
