Jon Stewart defends ‘first rate’ Dave Chappelle amid scandal


Their friendship is not any joke.

Jon Stewart is popping out in protection of longtime pal Dave Chappelle after he was accused of constructing transphobic remarks in his new Netflix comedy particular, “The Closer.”

Stewart, 58, told TMZ Thursday that Chappelle, 48, is “one of my favorite people on the planet” and that his intentions are “never hurtful.”

Chappelle has been beneath hearth because the launch of “The Closer” earlier this month, by which he declared himself to be a “trans-exclusionary radical feminist” (TERF).

“They canceled JK Rowling — my God. Effectually, she said gender was fact, the trans community got mad as s–t, they started calling her a TERF … I’m Team TERF,” he quipped within the stand-up particular.

“Gender is a fact. Every human being in this room, every human being on Earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on Earth. This is a fact.”

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos initially defended Chappelle, earlier than Netflix workers staged a walkout earlier this week. Sarandos now says he “screwed up” dealing with his staff’ complaints.

Now, Stewart has weighed in on the continuing scandal, standing by his beleaguered pal.

Speaking with TMZ, he described Chappelle as “warm,” “wise” and “decent.”

“Look, if this spurs a conversation where people get more on the same page in terms of understanding, that’d be great, but I know his intention is never hurtful — like, he’s just not that kind of person,” Stewart stated.

“And if it is [hurtful], it’s certainly unintentional … He’s really a good man.”

Stewart and Chappelle have been associates for years, and the pair carried out collectively in Ireland again in 2018.

In 2019, Stewart paid tribute to Chappelle as he was awarded the celebrated Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

On Thursday — the identical day Stewart defended his buddy — studies surfaced that Chappelle was keen to fulfill with transgender workers at Netflix.
